Phonics is taught daily in EYFS and Year 1 following the Letters and Sounds programme. From Year 2 onwards, this is replaced with a spelling scheme. Interventions are provided to those children in other year groups who still benefit from support with their phonics.
Towards the end of Year 1, children take a Phonics Screening Test consisting of 40 decodable real and alien words. Children have an opportunity to retake this test in Year 2.
Current Year 2 pupils (2021-22 academic year) will take their Phonics Screening Test formally in December 2021. We assess all children in EYFS and Year 1 each term to ensure they are working at the right level. We may send home activities for you to do with your child to support their phonics.
All the games on PhonicsPlay are free throughout lockdown!
