Catholic Life
Catholic Life at St Nicholas is very important because it helps our children grow in faith, kindness, and understanding. It teaches everyone that God loves us and that we should share that love through our words and actions. Prayer, worship, and learning about Jesus are part of everyday life. Our children are encouraged to help others, show respect, and make good choices. Celebrations like Mass and Feast days bring our school community together in joy and faith. Our dedication to Catholic Life and mission helps our children develop strong values, a caring heart, and a sense of belonging to God’s loving family.

September 2025
In September, we joyfully returned to school and began the new academic year by coming together as a faith community. We celebrated our Back to School Mass with Father Richard on the Feast Day of St Nicholas of Tolentino, a saint who holds special meaning for our school. This special occasion reminded us of the values of compassion, hope, and service that St Nicholas lived by, and it inspired us to begin the year with faith in our hearts and kindness in our actions. It was a wonderful opportunity to unite in prayer and ask God’s blessing for the year ahead.
On Education Sunday, pupils and staff from St Nicholas proudly represented our school at Cathedral Mass, joining the wider diocesan community in prayer and thanksgiving for the gift of Catholic education. Three of our pupils took part in the offertory procession, bringing up the gifts supported by staff, as a visible sign of our school’s faith in action. Their reverence and participation reflected the values we live each day—service, unity, and love. This special occasion highlighted our commitment to taking an active role in diocesan worship and to living out our Catholic mission, rooted in Christ at the heart of all we do.
On Monday 22nd September, Mrs James and our school Chaplains led a thoughtful whole-school assembly to mark International Peace Day. Together, we reflected on the importance of peace in our world, our families, and our daily lives. The Chaplains encouraged everyone to think about how we can be peacemakers through our words and actions, following the teachings of Jesus. We were reminded of His message in Scripture: “Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God” (Matthew 5:9). Inspired by this, we joined in prayer for peace across the world and renewed our commitment to showing understanding, kindness, and unity in our school community.
During the week of 29th September, our school took part in Little Way Week, inspired by the teachings of St Thérèse of Lisieux, the patron of mission. St Thérèse believed that small acts of love and kindness, done with a generous heart, can make a big difference in the world. Each day, we reflected on her “Little Way” and looked for simple opportunities to show care, patience, and generosity toward others. Whether it was offering a helping hand, sharing a smile, or saying a kind word, we learned that living out our faith doesn’t always require grand gestures—sometimes it begins with little acts that bring God’s love to those around us in our school and wider community.
October 2025
Our wonderful Green Team once again organised a Rags to Riches collection, encouraging families to donate unwanted clothes and household items to support those in need. This initiative not only helps us care for the environment by reusing and recycling, but also reminds us of our mission to care for others, especially the less fortunate. Through our generous giving, we put our faith into action and lived out the Gospel values of compassion and service. As Jesus teaches us, “Whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me” (Matthew 25:40). This project showed how, by working together, we can make a meaningful difference to others around the world.
Our Chaplains led a beautiful Harvest Assembly, reminding us of the importance of giving thanks for God’s gifts and sharing what we have with others. Together as a school, we reflected on how many people in our community go without basic necessities and how we are called to help. Inspired by this message, we worked as one family to collect food and essential items for our Church Foodbank, showing love through action. As Scripture teaches us, “Let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth” (1 John 3:18). Through our Harvest donations, we lived out our faith by showing kindness and generosity to those in need.
Mrs Rosolek-Field and our dedicated Chaplains led a whole-school Pop-Up Prayer Space, giving everyone a peaceful opportunity to reflect on the beauty of Creation and our Catholic Social Teaching theme of Care for Creation. Through prayer, reflection, and quiet activities, pupils were encouraged to appreciate the wonder of God’s world and think about how we can protect it for future generations. It was a wonderful opportunity for spiritual growth, helping us deepen our personal relationship with God while considering our responsibility as stewards of the Earth. We were reminded of the words from Scripture: “The Earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1), inspiring us to care for our common home with love and gratitude.

All Saints Mass
At our All Saints Mass, we remembered that in 835 AD the Church dedicated this special day as All Saints’ Day, a time to honour all the holy men and women who have lived lives of extraordinary faith. The children reminded us that Saints come from every age and walk of life—ordinary people who chose to follow Christ in extraordinary ways, with some even giving their lives for their faith. While we often think of well‑known Saints such as Mother Teresa, Saint Paul, and Saint Nicholas of Tolentino, today we celebrate all Saints, both famous and forgotten, who inspire us to live lives of love, courage, and holiness.
As Scripture reminds us: “Let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus” (Hebrews 12:1–2).
Green Team Recycling Assembly
Our Green Team led a thoughtful whole-school assembly this term on the importance of recycling and caring for God’s world. They reminded us that we are all called to be stewards of creation, teaching practical ways we can reduce waste and protect the environment in our daily lives. Their message encouraged us to see caring for our common home as an act of faith and responsibility. As Scripture reminds us: “The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it” (Psalm 24:1), inspiring us to care for creation with gratitude and respect.
Chaplaincy Commissioning at Clifton Cathedral
Our school chaplains visited Clifton Cathedral to participate in a special Mass with Bishop Bosco, where they were officially commissioned for their vital work in Chaplaincy. This was a wonderful opportunity to meet the Bishop and reaffirm their commitment to nurturing the Catholic life of our school community. Chaplaincy plays an essential role in guiding faith, fostering prayer, and supporting spiritual growth among pupils and staff. We are incredibly proud of our Chaplaincy team and the dedication they show every day.
"Serve one another humbly in love." — Galatians 5:13
Children in Need
As part of our Catholic mission to show love, compassion and support for others, our school community came together for Children in Need with a joyful cake sale and a fun dress‑up day. The children were excited to take part—bringing in baked treats, wearing bright and creative outfits, and learning about the importance of helping those who may be facing difficult times. Through their generosity, we raised both money and awareness for children in need across the country, living out our call to “serve one another in love” (Galatians 5:13). It was a wonderful celebration of kindness, teamwork and putting our faith into action.

Advent Mass
At our Advent Mass, we gathered as a school community to reflect on this special season of hopeful waiting and preparation. The children reminded us that Advent is a time when we try our best to say yes to God, to say sorry for the moments we fall short, and to give thanks for the gift of preparing once again for the birth of Jesus. We listened to the Gospel of Luke and heard how a young girl named Mary had deep faith and courage, saying yes to God’s call to become the mother of Jesus. As we celebrated this Mass, we reflected on how we, too, can follow Mary’s example—trusting God, opening our hearts, and preparing joyfully for the coming of Christ. “Behold, I am the servant of the Lord; let it be to me according to your word” (Luke 1:38).
Key Stage 1 Nativity
Our Key Stage 1 children led a truly beautiful and traditional performance of the Nativity this year, sharing the Christmas story with reverence, joy and confidence. Through their thoughtful reading, expressive acting and heartfelt singing, they helped our whole school community pause and reflect on the real meaning of this special season. Their performance reminded us of the light, hope and peace brought into the world at the birth of Jesus: “For unto us a child is born… and he will be called Wonderful Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace” (Isaiah 9:6).
Key Stage 2 Carol Concert
Our Key Stage 2 children brought our Christmas celebrations to a beautiful close with this year’s KS2 Carol Concert. Year 5 and Year 6 led us in thoughtful reflections that guided us through the story of Christ’s birth, offering meaningful opportunities for prayer and contemplation. Each class shared a performance that united us through their joyful and reverent singing, helping us to celebrate as one school community. We are grateful to all the parents and families who joined us throughout the week for our Christmas celebrations. As we reflected together, we were reminded of the message of hope at the heart of the season: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, goodwill toward all” (Luke 2:14).

Epiphany Mass
We began our new term by coming together as a school family to celebrate the Feast of the Epiphany. On this special day, Christians across the world remember the moment when the Wise Men travelled from distant lands to visit Jesus as a child and recognise Him as the Son of God. Their journey reminds us of the joy of being known, cherished and chosen by God. During our Mass, we reflected on the gifts the Wise Men brought and the gifts we share with one another as God’s children—gifts of kindness, friendship and faith. Fr Richard reminded us that, just like the Wise Men, we come to Jesus offering the most precious gifts we have: the gift of our love and the gift of ourselves. As we start this new year together, we hold in our hearts the words of Scripture: “They saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshipped him” (Matthew 2:11).
Chaplaincy Ethos Walk
This term, our Chaplaincy Team were delighted to welcome our Chair of Governors into school for an Ethos Walk, offering a wonderful opportunity to share and celebrate the richness of our Catholic Life. Together, they visited classrooms, prayer spaces and communal areas, witnessing the many ways our faith is lived out daily through our words, actions and commitment to one another. The walk highlighted not only the dedicated work of our Chaplaincy Team, but also the collective efforts of our whole community in nurturing a school rooted in Gospel values. We are reminded of the call to shine God’s light in all we do: “Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven” (Matthew 5:16).

Pop up Prayer Space - We All Matter!
This term, our Chaplaincy Team thoughtfully led our whole-school Pop Up Prayer Space, focusing on the Catholic Social Teaching theme “We All Matter.” With reverence and maturity, they guided children through meaningful reflections on the dignity of every person and the importance of gratitude in our daily lives. Pupils were invited to consider who and what they are thankful for, taking time to pause, pray and recognise God’s presence in the people around them. These prayerful sessions are always deeply valued by our children, offering a calm and sacred space to grow in faith together. As Scripture reminds us: “You are precious in my eyes, and honoured, and I love you” (Isaiah 43:4).
