Live Simply - CAFOD

At St Nicholas, we are proud to be working towards the LiveSimply Award - a national scheme that recognises schools living:

  • Simply
  • Sustainably with creation
  • In Solidarity with people living in poverty

The LiveSimply Award, coordinated by CAFOD, the Catholic agency for overseas development, is presented to schools who demonstrate they are living simply, living sustainably, and living in solidarity with the world’s poorest communities.

During our LiveSimply journey, we will be taking faith inspired actions that support our school & local communities and our global sisters and brothers too.

This award reflects our deep commitment to putting faith into action. Inspired by the teachings of Jesus, Catholic Social Teaching, and Laudato Si’, we have pledged to complete nine faith-inspired actions that will make a meaningful impact on our global family, our local community, and our school environment.

Throughout 2026, our pupils and staff will take part in a range of activities that promote care for creation, thoughtful living, and compassion for others. These actions will help us reflect on how we live, how we share, and how we serve — together as a community of hope.

We look forward to sharing our progress and celebrating the steps we take on this journey.

Our Actions for the year:

Global Actions

  • We will raise funds to purchase CAFOD World Gifts. The whole school can fundraise together, or each class can choose how they will fundraise. Pupils can be involved in choosing the gifts. (Living in Solidarity)
  • We will engage with Fairtrade and introduce actions to support it (e.g. hold a Fairtrade stall, switch to Fairtrade products in the tuck shop, ask each family to swap at least one item for a Fairtrade product). (Living in Solidarity)

  • We will take part in Refugee Week, raising awareness and spending time in prayer for our fellow brothers and sisters forced to flee their homes overseas.   (Living Simply)

Local Actions

  • Pupils will write prayers and we will invite parents/parishioners and the local community to share time with us in prayer in our school (e.g. in a prayer garden or a special part of the school grounds/building). (Living Simply)
  • Inspired by Laudato Si' pupils will organise a litter pick in the community to protect wildlife and keep the local area tidy. Where possible, litter picked will be recycled appropriately. (Living sustainably)
  • We will support our local foodbank. Pupils will be involved with organising, promoting, and checking the donations. Where possible we will visit a local foodbank or invite a representative to school to share more about their work. (Living in Solidarity)

School Actions

  • Pupils and staff will each write a LiveSimply pledge, and we will create a display. We will individually keep a note of our pledges so we can revisit them.   (Living simply)
  • We will take action to Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Repair, Regift, Recycle. Pupils will be involved in implementing, raising awareness, and taking part in actions.   (Living Sustainably)
  • We will use our school grounds to live more sustainably (e.g. growing produce, planting wildflowers and pollinator friendly plants, planting trees). (Living Sustainably)
